Free Radicals And How It Causes Cellular Death, Aging And Diseases

Free radicals are created by oxidation.

When found in over-abundance, what they do is they will harm your normal cells by destroying/harming them, which decreases cellular health. This leads to cellular death, and this means accelerated aging...and causing havoc with your cells and health.

Free radicals are basically simple molecules with an electron missing. In an effort to become ‘whole’ again they seek out other chemical structures in our bodies from where they can steal an electron, and forcibly take the electron from the healthy cell.

After they ‘get’ an electron from a particular cell from a particular tissue/structure, this damages the bio-chemical composition of the cell, harming and maybe even destroying it.

Small amounts of free radicals is normal (read the box below) and in controlled quantities is safe and ok and even is helpful in everyday metabolism and they take part in normal reactions in the body.

The problems start when the processes that control the production of these free radicals increases and goes out of whack/control.

Unfortunately, oxidation is unavoidable...as long as we breathe oxygen there will be oxidation in our body and thus the creation of free radicals will always continue =(

In a perfect world, there will be no pollution, no pain, no diseases, no stress, and everyone is 100% healthy, diets would be perfect and free radical levels will be normal and never high, and we all will live to healthy, ripe golden age and die only from natural causes and never from diseases.

But of course, that's definitely not the case today.

Everywhere we go, there's air pollution.

There's massive haze from Indonesia that caused a lot of lung infections, coughs and irritated eyes that permeated Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia (especially Sumatra and Kalimantan), Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Cambodia and Philippines. It was so bad that schools had to be closed, massive number of people falling ill and sick.

China's air pollution poses major health risk to its inhabitants. Coal combustion generate particulate matters ("PM"), and currently, Beijing suffers from a PM2.5, which means the particulate matters is 2.5 micrometers or less...and according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, such fine particles can cause asthma, bronchitis, and acute and chronic respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath and painful breathing, and may also lead to premature death. The Telegraph reported a case of an 8-year-old girl who had contracted lung cancer, becoming the youngest victim of lung cancer in China.

And that's just a small sliver of the air pollution in south east Asia.

There's still other forms of pollutions.

There's second hand smoke. There's the lack of nutrients, minerals and vitamins in our calorie rich diets. There's radiations. Toxins in our foods, waters, fruits. And we're exposed to all sorts of toxic chemicals in our every day lives, including furniture that we use and medicines that we take.

It builds over time. Gradually and collectively, it creates a "snow-balling" effect, especially for us who live in cities and advanced and developed countries.

Generally, there are only three (3) ways to decrease, minimize and eradicate the damage from free radicals:

  • Environmentally, through avoiding pollution, radiation etc. Impossible if you live in a ‘civilized’ populated area
  • Neutralize free radicals with antioxidants
  • Increasing the elimination of cells damaged by free radicals

How do antioxidants neutralize free radicals?

What anti-oxidants do is that they easily, voluntarily and pro-actively give one of their electrons to a free radical molecule - solving the problem of the free radical "stealing" electrons from other healthy cells.

Antioxidants can do this without damaging their own structures or themselves....because they're meant to do that. It truly is nature’s way of keeping the oxidation process in check. Oxidation is a critical yet normal tool for nature.

It helps things to break down and decompose, like how compost is made, and break apart - normal.

But, it should be all be in a state of balance. In the early 1900s to 1970s, free radicals were not so much of a problem for two reasons.

  • Food then was not processed, not picked early, and so, they were much more nutritious and contained adequate antioxidants. This is not the same today.

  • There has been so much industrial development that has increased the levels of pollution, radiation, toxins in food and chemicals in our everyday environment.

We have a lot of experts today that say that it is ok and possible to get enough antioxidants purely from diet to control excess free radical activity...that is not true.

You can see, the case of cancer rates has increased tremendously and diseases and illnesses too - if what they say if true, then it doesn't truly reflect.

You see, today we face a multi-pronged-problem…the generation of free radicals at a rate which has never before been experienced by the human race, and the depletion of nutrients, minerals and antioxidants from our food supply.

Examples of antioxidants…

There are a lot of antioxidants, hundreds of them, all with varying levels of potency.

For example, the common vitamins A, C and E are all actually antioxidants, but they are all quite weak. Same like selenium. All of them are necessary, but they can't really compare to an active and potent anti-oxidant such as L-Glutathione.

Interestingly, our human body can product L-Glutathione, as long as our internal systems and processes are healthy and alright, and is given the right triggers but is better to supplement too.

But, supplementing with L-Glutathione is not useful nor effective in most supplements for two reasons.

#1 It has to be taken in the special ‘reduced’ form.

This is a smaller molecular size, as the ‘normal’-sized L-Glutathione will not pass through the intestinal walls into the blood stream.
This reduced form is a lot more expensive than the normal L-Glutathione and few manufacturers use it.

#2 It must be protected as it passes through the stomach before being released in the upper intestine.

Only in the upper intestines is where L-Glutathione when taken orally can be truly effective. This means that the supplement must be in the form of an enteric coated tablet and the nutrient released in the upper intestine.

Total Balance uses enteric coating technology AND the special reduced form of L-Glutathione.

Some of the other good antioxidants which whilst not as potent as L-Glutathione are still more potent than the common vitamins:

  • Lutein
  • Bilberry
  • L-Carnosine
  • Grape extract
  • Green tea extract

All of these, and more are in Total Balance Series
