Bee Pollen & A Case Report of Acute Renal Failure Associated With Bee Pollen (February 2010 Research)

This abstract available online at:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1744-9987.2009.00707.x/full

We report a case of renal failure associated with the ingestion of bee pollen containing nutritional supplement. A 49-year-old male patient who had been ingesting a nutritional supplement for more than five months had breathing difficulties, anuria, exceptional weight gain (20 kg) due to systemic edema, and loss of appetite.

A renal biopsy confirmed interstitial nephritis with the presence of eosinophils, which is suggestive of drug-induced acute renal failure. The nutritional supplement was ceased and hemodialysis begun.

The patient’s condition improved after several hemodialysis sessions, which were then stopped. Current information regarding the adverse effects of bee pollen is not very robust, therefore potential damage should be kept in mind before ingesting nutritional supplements in which it is contained.

This report serves as an important reminder to the public as well as healthcare providers of the potential of renal failure related to nutritional supplements.

This is a negative article on bee pollen, and I think it’s good to add a balanced view on bee pollen. This study showed that a 49-year old Japanese male in Japan who experienced an acute renal failure (ARF; page 93-97).

This study was published in the February 2010 issue of Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, and was done and conducted by Japanese researchers in Japan.

The real question here is that: does this mean that bee pollen shouldn’t be taken as a supplement?

Personally I don’t think so. Yes, the conclusion of this research is clear, but we also need to note that there are many other clinical studies that shows bee pollen as beneficial to health.

There is the last part that I don’t really quite agree:

“This report serves as an important reminder to the public as well as healthcare providers of the potential of renal failure related to nutritional supplements.”

Frankly, being a healthcare professional, the western healthcare system is a super gift to mankind, but the system isn’t perfect: is has hundreds of thousands if not millions of incidents where patients were hurt because of wrong diagnosis, mistakes and more.

Western medicine is best when it comes to their surgical interventions and medications that are for short term acute management, but their long term medications are not good in the least.

The pharmaceutical solutions are very well known for many side effects that can be more harmful than the conditions the patient came in with, and we have seen many patients given medicine “to counter/relieve the side effect” of another medication!

Public healthcare is still driven to help the public, as medicine and pharma are becoming more profit-driven and focusing more on making money than helping. But there is one thing that I like that is mentioned in the study is that:

the importance of using quality bee pollen that is proven pharmaceutical-grade quality

This is always vital, as quality and nutritional potency and purity is very important to health benefits.
