Let's keep building our best health for our future and people we love - Nigel Chua, Health Supplement Enthusiast
I've a bee pollen-dedicated site at BeePollenForHealth.com - do swing by to go in-depth on bee pollen supplementing and more there - Nigel
Are bee pollen supplements good or bad for you? They’re very rich in minerals, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and nutrients, but some critics say that it’s all “sales talk”.
So what’s the truth? Is it good or bad?
Nutritionist and author Carlson Wade said that bee pollen itself has every mineral, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and nutrients that humans need. He added that it also boosts energy and stamina, helps with weight loss, increases sexual drive as well helps as a general wellness supplement as well.
Of course, some critics are saying that these are all just “sales and marketing talk” designed to push for sales.
It is a fair critique, and so let’s zoom straight to data and information to show you scientific and clinical research and tests to show bee pollen nutritional profile and benefits.
The focus is to answer: Bee Pollen Supplements: Good Or Bad For You?
Ok, inasmuch research has been done on bee pollen and its nutrients and effects, I think that it’s still insufficient. Plus, there are conflicting information on bee pollen’s benefits.
That being said, there is a good amount of available information for a health enthusiast who is discerning and takes the time to research and sift through the information and compare, to make well informed decisions.
In 1990, Jame Scheer said in the Health Freedom News that bee pollen contains 185 of the known nutritional ingredients — 22 amino acids and higher amounts of the eight essential ones than most high protein foods, 27 mineral salts, the entire range of vitamins, hormones, carbohydrates and fats and more than 5,000 enzymes and co-enzymes, necessary for digestion, healing and for the continuity of life itself.
Later in 1993, Royden Brown wrote in his book, How to Live The Millennium that
The laboratories of the world community of nations confirmed that bee pollen contains all nutrients necessary in human nutrition.
Of course, Brown with his partners later paid $200,000 of settlement charges of misrepresentation of their bee pollen products as able to cause weight loss, decrease allergies, slow aging, and improve sexual dysfunction.
The United Nations’s Food and Agriculture Organization said that:
The only long-term observations on the medicinal effect of pollen are related to prostate problems and allergies.
And this is seemingly observed and documented in Western European countries where bee pollen is shown to be clinically effective treating prostate issues such as infections to swelling to cancer.
The United Nations’s Food and Agriculture Organization continue to say that:
Many people report improvement of sometimes chronic problems and supplementation of animal diets with [bee] pollen has shown positive weight gain and other beneficial effects for piglets, calves, broiler chickens and laboratory cultures of insect.
And they added that bee pollen also seems to be able to help with individuals who have been exposed to radiation effects, including radiation treatments, by saying:
There is some evidence that ingested pollen can protect animals as well as humans against the adverse effects of x-ray radiation treatments.
This is stronger evidence and information from an UN organization, and they added that:
The major use of pollen today is as a food or, more correctly, as a food supplement. As stated earlier its likely value as a food for humans is frequently overstated and has never been proven in controlled experiments.
That it is not a perfect food, as stated on many advertisements, food packages and even in various non-scientific publications should be obvious. Its low content or absence of the fat soluble vitamins should be sufficient scientific evidence. This does not mean that its consumption may not be beneficial, as has been shown scientifically with various animal diets.
Pollen has been added to diets for domestic animals and laboratory insects resulting in improvements of health, growth and food conversion rates.
Of course, what comes along with these clinical studies and research from around the world are also stories and testimonials of uses and consumers (there are also a number of professional doctors, therapists like myself, and researchers that praise the health benefits that bee pollen brings)
Lee Conway, MD encourages bee pollen granules for his patients. Sigmund Schmidt, MD of Natural Health Clinic: Bee pollen contains all the essential elements for healthy tissue and may well prove to be the natural cancer preventive all the world is seeking. L.J. Hays, M.D., says that:
Bees sterilize pollen by means of a glandular secretion which is antagonistic to tumors. Ernesto Contreras, M.D. said: To my knowledge, there is no better and more complete natural nutrient than honeybee pollen.
A report from Naturheilpraxis, “A Summary of Clinical Tests Concluded With Bee Pollen,” says,
…a reduction of cholesterol and triglycerides and also of S-lipo-proteins and albumins, while K and S globulins increase. A normalization of cholesterol count… in 40 patients who suffered from cerebral sclerosis…
A treatment with a combination of bee pollen, royal jelly, and honey has positive effects during the biological crises of puberty and adolescence, during behavioral disturbances, with problems of adjustment, learning disabilities, neurotic disturbances, and excessive neuromuscular sensititivity.
You can see how bee pollen has a mix and varied opinion, from different parts of the world. Interestingly, quite a number of medical professionals and researchers say “aye” and that it’s an amazing nutritious superfood and critics are saying that it’s clinically unproven…
…though clinical tests show that it’s proven to help animals. Hmm. Other than that, there is a lot of personal testimonials and anecdotal input from consumers on how bee pollen has improved their health, from increased energy for sports and daily work, to libido and sex drive, to weight loss, to skin care and even to general wellness.
Sadly, what seems to be happening is that the critics are not many, just the larger establishments such as the government agencies like the US FDA, educational institutions and hospitals, which are all interlinked to government, which focus that bee pollen is too dangerous to be used to improve health.
Most of the praise seemingly comes from European researchers who have done clinical research to show its benefits. I understand when governments are cautious because anything they “endorse or allow” can affect millions of lives (or dollars), but I think herein, you have to make your own informed decisions about this.
The money in healthcare is big, and the hospitals are intertwined with pharmaceutical companies, and anything “natural” will impact the profitability of billions to both.
For me, as long as it builds good health and well with zero or minimal downsides that are associated with western medicine, I’m game. I’ve seen too many people suffering or dying from side effects of western medicine but I am very aware of the massive benefit it brings to those that truly benefit from surgical interventions.
I’ve been working as an occupational therapist since 2005, and have been both in the hospitals and the outpatient clinical settings and have seen my fair share of health conditions, which too is one of the reasons for me to move and explore the natural superfoods such as bee pollen to improve my health.
I’ve shared before on my personal experience (more on that below) and I have been using bee pollen supplements since 2014 to keep me energetic and on top of my long days wearing multiple hats in family, business, investment and life. I will keep taking my bee pollen as it is a life-saver and is very helpful for me.
Regardless, I do recommend that you speak with your doctor to ensure that you’re not in the very small minority of less than 5% that has allergies to bee products before you start this pollen supplement.
The bee pollen supplement I take is freeze dried and scientifically formulated to also contain additional synergistic enzymes, amino acids and minerals to enhance the health benefits.
The pollen is harvested from north-western corner of south island of New Zealand, a pure and pristine area beside a national part that is free from industrialization and airborne pollution. Its nutritional effects will be noticed and I comfortably personally endorse it.
When you factor in the fact that it is processed and manufactured in GMP compliant facilities with standards that meet the FDA’s standards for pharmaceutical-grade quality drugs, it’s even better. Basically earning this a nutraceutical status (highest label for a supplement in terms of quality), and this is not common nor easily found in the US.
The manufacturer also offers a 365 days money back guarantee or full product replacement – something the health world don’t offer today. It’s also less expensive than other supplements while still maintaining a high level of quality, pharmaceutical quality.
I’ve been taking this personally since 2014, and I honestly say this: it has helped me a lot in my life, giving me all the energy, health and wellness I need to handle my 5 AM to 10 PM days everyday, young children, family, manage multiple busy physiotherapy clinics, meetings, investments, readings etc.
To me, it’s one of my favorite and important supplements that I take every day. Without fail.
