Inflammation And How It Causes Cellular Death, Aging And Diseases

On top of having to deal with free radicals, glycation and methylation, our bodies also have to combat chronic and acute inflammation.

The battle with inflammation happens every moment of the day, regardless if you're awake, asleep or aware. Inflammation is inter-related with the three matters above as well.

Left uncontrolled, inflammation will destroy tissues in your body. Actually, many scientists and researchers are concluding and believing that chronic inflammation is the cause of most age-related damages.

Excessive inflammations increases the secretions of toxic and destructive chemicals in our bodies, which eat and destroy healthy body tissues, causing diseases such as heart disease, dementia, arthritis, diabetes, just to name a few of them.

Another example is MDA (malondialdehyde) - a very dangerous chemical byproduct formed in your body as a result of the action of free radicals on the fatty membranes of your cells. It is a major factor in the production of AGEs from glycation. This same chemical, MDA, is also implicated in inflammation.

This shows how all free radicals, glycation, methylation and inflammation are inter-related.

stopping the evil supply chain

So, back to using the example of the MDA, if you decrease the levels of free radicals in your body through the use of antioxidants then you will reduce the oxidation rate of your cell membranes which in turn decreases the formation of MDA which decreases glycation and the formation of AGEs…and this will help reduce inflammation. In other words, you stop the evil vicious supply chain.

But it is not possible to influence and control all the free radicals in your body, so no matter how many antioxidants you take, there will be some form MDA created, and these will continue to try to produce AGEs which in turn can contribute to inflammation.

This highlights the importance of taking Carnosine in addition to antioxidants in order to minimize the formation of AGEs.

Another but here: unfortunately, not all AGEs can be avoided and because of that not all inflammation can be avoided too, so to be safe, you need to also address inflammation on top of the other three issues.

If you don’t, your ‘anti-aging’ or ‘wellness’ program WILL never be successful.

Let's go a little deeper.

A component of inflammation is excitotoxicity.

If excitotoxicity is allowed to "continue uninterrupted", it will lead to the death of brain cells that will lead to cerebrovascular accidents (also known as CVAs and strokes) as well as the onset of vascular dementia.

Excitotoxicity happens when our nerves and brain cells get overexcited due to excess glutamate in the diet. MSG and other flavor enhancers are the culprits here and should be kept to a minimum in your diet.

Excitotoxicity is the pathological process by which neurons are damaged and killed by the overactivations of receptors for the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, such as the NMDA receptor and AMPA receptor.

Luckily, Carnosine protect against excessive excitotoxicity.

Another serious and dangerous chemical associated with chronic inflammation is tumour necrosis factor (TNF) - TNF actively exacerbates and promotes the degeneration of your brain and nerves, and is activated by a combination of free radicals and AGEs.

Some physicians / doctors and marketers on the internet promote Omega 3 fish oil as the answer to inflammation. Yes, the anti-inflammatory component of Omega 3 fish oils are certainly active, powerful and helpful in reducing the impact of inflammation…but, it is only dealing with one of the four component of the much broader picture of inflammation.

So let's talk about TNF as another example. To keep this nasty chemical as low a level as possible you need to also be taking nutrients that will help, such as a calorie restriction mimics. This is another subject on its own but the best known natural calorie restriction mimics is resveratrol.

Key nutrients that can work in synergy with Omega 3 fish oil to reduce inflammation and the damage from it are:

  • Flavanoids
  • Alpha lipoic acid
  • Carnosine
  • Turmeric
  • Glutathione
  • Resveratrol

(all of these are present in Total Balance)

Just addressing free radicals with antioxidants or inflammation with fish oils will NOT achieve what you want. It is only PART of the equation. It takes more that one nutrient to get a result in just one part of this very complex equation. Each part has to be addressed from multiple angles, and EVERY part of the equation also needs to be dealt with.

There is a reason why Xtend-Life has up to 99 nutrients in their Total Balance range. Each and every one nutrient is specially selected for a reason and has been carefully integrated. The individual components of each nutrient have also been studied and sometimes the component of that nutrient other than the common active ingredient in it, is what is wanted for a specific function.
